THE RED APPLE AND THE WIJNHAVEN ISLAND

The ‘Red Apple’ is the name of an apartment building in the so-called ‘Wijnhaven Island area of Rotterdam’. Its name is borrowed from the colour of the cladding panels, along with the history of the site (it was previously a loading dock for ships carrying apples), and a playful nod to the Mecca of high-rise buildings – New York. The building and the master-plan for its surroundings where designed by KCAP Architects and Planners who have reinvigorated a somewhat neglected post-war reconstruction era district of offices and business properties well past their prime. Here, the Red Apple and its surroundings buildings and urban environment are surveyed through colour photographs, plans and writings.
