The renovation of old buildings requires some constraint: on the one hand is the designer's natural desire to start anew and let the imagination run free - to show off a bit; and on the other is the need to safeguard historically significant buildings or otherwise preserve unique aspects of the existing structure. It is a difficult balance to strike, and the works included in this volume were selected for their proven success in bringing out the best in old structures, while adding new elements and functions.

Ground plans, architectural commentary, sketches, construction details and photographs accompany each project, with a range encompassing converted monasteries, villas, castles, factories and more.
