FEATURE

"Design Seoul" Selects a New Symbol of Seoul, the New City Hall
Yoo Kerl‘s proposal was selected as the winning design for the Competition for Re-design of the New Seoul City Hall.
This competition went back to square one by reversing the existing plans and inviting Yoo Kerl, Park Seung-hong, Ryu Choon-soo, and Cho Min-suk as participants.
In the results, the Seoul Metropolitan Government championed the values of symbolism and historicity in relation to other architectural values. Currently the new City Hall is at a point in time when concrete and practical architectural discussions are in need, when it should be beyond being described as just an icon of Seoul.
In this feature, the article by Prof. Lee Gong-hee places emphasis on truthfulness of architecture, and all four proposals that participated in the competition are introduced.

SPECIAL ISSUE

Stranger than Paradise
Theme parks are created by the reproduction of images and illusions that the public has. These buildings are in a "Stranger than paradise" reality, just like in the movie by Jim Jarmusch.
However, even if our reality is full of deceptive illusions, is it a good alternative to deny these illusions through disillusioning perspectives or to expose the deceptiveness of these illusions?
We need to thoroughly think about what the objectives of these strange scenes are.

In this issue we take a close look at the architectural experiences of Arata Isozaki, who has been unfolding architectural language of diverse scopes by utilizing "writing" as a mental and cultural activity, and crossing and extending the boundaries of traditional architecture.
