Présentation de l'éditeur :
This article examines the role of building envelopes
as a primary means of defining architecture in terms of not only the
functional aspects but also its aesthetic implications. The author
argues for the role of facades and walls as mediative by introducing the
notion of surface. The article includes key models of building
envelopes and each respective position in today’s architectural
environment. Next he proposes a conception of surface as the primary
means of constructing the building’s relationship to a context and as a
medium through which an environment is perceived. In addition, the
article discusses philosophical positions that frame envelope - surface
as a form of mimesis. Here the author argues that mimesis defines our
relationship to our environment and contributes critically to the
building’s spatial characters. In closing, the author cites some of the
featured projects in reference to the discussions.
