The site of the St. Johann plant in Basel, headquarters of Novartis, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, will be transformed from a production complex into a research and administration center—or more precisely: into a campus for the dissemination of knowledge and the development of innovations.
Architect and urban planner Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani was entrusted with the planning of the entire project. The campus is being constructed according to a long-term, flexible master plan that will trace the simple and clear original structure of the existing complex while striving for pleasant surroundings and elegance. An internationally famous team of experts from around the world has come together to work on landscape architecture, art, light, and graphic design. Featuring more than two hundred illustrations, a series of essays, and a conversation with the architects, this extensive volume introduces this bold project, whose first phase—consisting of eleven ambitious new buildings, a park, a square, various streets, and an underground parking garage—will be completed in 2009.
