SOM journal 7 is the most recent issue in a continuing
series that presents the work of SOM in the context of a critical
discussion. The process of review by a jury is a daring enterprise
unique to SOM. The jurors for this issue were Erik Olsen, Rita McBride,
Peter MacKeith, Juhani Pallasmaa, Luis Fernandez-Galiano, Joan Ockman,
and Kenneth Frampton. The jury was held on May 19, 2010, at the Seagram
Building in New York.
It includes the essays “Notes on
the Techno-Aesthetic Evolution of High-Rise Form, 1896–1997” by Kenneth
Frampton, “The Myth of Natural Growth II” by Thomas van Leeuwan,
“Building Tall” by William Baker, “Emergence and the Power of One” by
Mark Sarkisian, and “How the Leopard Got Its Spots: Lever House as a
Skyscraper” by Nicholas Adams.
