Présentation de l'éditeur :
R. M. Schindler (1887-1953) suffered decades of neglect within the panorama of American architecture. His heterodoxy with respect to the dominant modern movement meant that assessment of his work has undergone considerable ups and downs, during his own lifetime and since. Now, however, the quality of his architecture seems to be beyond question.
Of R. M. Schindler's extensive output over the course of his career, the 10 houses presented here span the whole of the architect's professional activity in Los Angeles, from his first independent commission -the Schindler-Chace house in West Hollywood (1921-1922)- through to one of his last works, the Tishler house in Westwood (1949-1950). These 10 houses illustrate the versatility of this architect who, although born in Europe, skilfully and sensitively combined the best of Central European architectural culture with the lessons he learned from the great Frank Lloyd Wright. The ideas of modernity of Otto Wagner, Schindler's teacher in Vienna, alongside the influence of Adolf Loos and his idea of the Raumplan come together in a body of work with a special vision of the setting, in which architecture and landscape form part of a personal way of understanding interior spaces in relation to the built environment. This issue of 2G, edited by Judith Sheine, features splendid photographs by Grant Mudford and specially prepared graphic material, together with critical studies by Judith Sheine herself, Enric Miralles and Michael Rotondi, and an exhaustive survey of the history of R. M. Schindler's reputation by Margaret Crawford.
The ten houses featured in this issue reflect the hole of the architect's work over the course of his long career: Schindler-Chase house, West Hollywood; How house, Silverlake; Oliver house, Silverlake; Buck house, Mid-Wilshire; DeKeyser house, Hollywood; Walker house, Silverlake; Rodriguez house, Glendale; Kallis house, Studio City; Armon house, Mt. Washington and Tishler house, Westwood.
