Essays by O. Macel, W. Blaser, W. Tegethoff, L. Kudelkova, K. Schulte and M. Kries

Together with Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe is considered one of the most important and influential architects of the twentieth century. He was not only a brilliant and innovative architect, he was also a gifted teacher and an event organiser in the field of architecture.
This work, published on the occasion of the exhibition in Mantua organised by Vitra Design Museum, documents Mies van der Rohe’s career as designer of furniture and architect in relation to his three main European projects from the 1920s and 1930s: the Weissenhof building in Stuttgart, the pavilion for the International Exposition in Barcelona (1929) and Villa Tugendhat in Brno.

An exploration of living space in modern homes and the application of the most advanced technologies intertwine in an aesthetic meditation that stimulated many design ideas in the post WWII period and in contemporary debate.
The objects designed by Mies van der Rohe between 1926 and 1932 for these interiors were carefully conceived in relation to the architectonic space for which they were specifically intended.
The publication contains introductory essays by David Palterer, Alexander von Vegesack and Mateo Kries, critical contributions by Otakar Mác¡el (Dalla produzione di serie ai classici del design: i mobili di metallo di Mies van der Rohe), Fratelli Thonet and Jutta Sachsenröder (La produzione Thonet dei progetti di Mies), Carl Magnusson (La produzione Knoll dei progetti di Mies), Karin Schulte (Il complesso del Weißenhof a Stoccarda), Wolf Tegethoff (Il padiglione tedesco di Barcellona), Lenka Kudelková and Otakar Mác¡el (Villa Tugendhat a Brno), and Werner Blaser (Incontro con Ludwig Mies van der Rohe).

The monograph is richly illustrated with original photographs, architectural designs and objects and also has detailed information on the projects and furniture pieces, in addition to a biography of the architect and a bibliography.
