Searching for Space is about the architect Herman Hertzberger, about his oeuvre and the forces that motivate him. It is a film portrait of a multi-faceted man with a strong commitment to social change. Life itself is the source for Hertzberger’s conceptions. When he designs a house, a school or a factory, his primary concern is not the architecture itself but the life that will be lived inside it. Herman Hertzberger is without a doubt one of the Netherlands’ most important architects. What are the factors that have determined his style? How are his ideas reflected in his architecture? How have the buildings changed, and how will they change in the future? Does he still profess the same utopian ideals as in the past, or does he have a new, different vision of the ways in which society can be shaped? The answers to these questions will be given in this film, which is introduced by the director Kees Hin and the architect Maarten Kloos.
